Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved emergency repair works on the damaged Mosogar-Oghara section of the Warri-Benin Highway to ease the hardship faced by motorists and other road users.
The governor’s directive followed growing complaints from commuters over the poor condition of the federal highway, which has caused heavy traffic, long travel delays and raised safety concerns.
The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, announced the approval on Wednesday, saying the intervention was aimed at restoring easier movement along the busy road.
Although the Warri-Benin Highway is a Federal Government road, Izeze said the governor decided to step in because of the severe hardship experienced daily by thousands of commuters and the importance of the route to economic activities in the South-South region.
He said the governor directed that immediate palliative work be carried out pending the full reconstruction of the highway by the Federal Government.
According to the commissioner, Obakpor Engineering Construction Company has already moved to the site with construction materials, including stones and sand, to begin the emergency repairs.
Izeze expressed confidence that the work would reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and make movement easier for motorists using the route.
He added that the intervention reflected the commitment of both the Delta State and Federal Governments to improving infrastructure and the welfare of citizens.
The Warri-Benin Highway is one of Nigeria’s busiest roads, linking the South-South region with other parts of the country. It is widely used by private motorists, commercial transport operators and trucks conveying petroleum products, agricultural produce and other goods.
The Mosogar-Oghara section has deteriorated in recent months, leading to frequent gridlock, vehicle breakdowns and increased transportation costs for road users.
