Delta State Government has distributed environment -friendly and effective disinfectants to 100 pig and poultry farmers in the state to ensure production of high quality meat for export.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Julius Egbedi, while addressing the benefiting farmers on Thursday at the Government Veterinary Clinic, Asaba, said most farmers neglect disinfectant as besic input in animal health and production.
The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Sir, Austin Oghoro, said that the global management of the environment recognizes the need to control animal pests without causing damage to the environment.
He said that the overall objective was to ensure or eliminate environmental microbial burden to allow for improved health and productivity through effective and economic use of medication.
According to Egbedi, the gesture is to encourage farmers to spend more on disinfectant rather than on drugs especially antibiotics for health reasons and to enable our meat and meat products gain acceptance in the international market.
“The world antibiotics week celebrated recently was to draw public attention to the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and its consequences; Antibiotics should be the last resort and based on prescription only.
“For this reason, the Delta Government in 2019 has provided a quantity of environment – friendly and effective disinfectant to be disbursed to 50 pig and 50 poultry farmers.
“Each farmer is to receive 10 liters of CID20; at a delusion rate of 1:400, will make up 4,000 liters of solution (20 drums).
“This is enough to sustain an average farm for between 6 and 12 months depending of the size of the farm”.
He thanked the state governor for approving distribution of the disinfectant free to the benefiting farmers while urging the farmers to reciprocate the gesture by maintaining a high hygiene levels in their farms.
In a welcome address, Dr Charles Diai, State Director Veterinary Series of the ministry, said that distribution of the disinfectant was one of the several supports the state government has giving to farmers in the state.
According to Diai, the gesture is to encourage farmers to maintain hygiene in the farms for high guilty meat production.
“When you manage your environment properly by using disinfectant, you reduce the cost of buying antibiotics thereby increasing your production”.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Jerry Ossai, the State Chairman, Pig Farmers Association of Nigeria and Mr Fidelis Ekoemweye, State Financial, Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria, laude the state government for the support.
They pledged the resolved to put the disinfectant into good use to refuse the microbial in their farms to ensure high quality meat production in the state to meet international standards.
