Jos, Plateau State – A High Court in Jos has sentenced a final-year student, Odey Emmanuel, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering his teacher, Mr. Job Dashe.
The crime happened on July 30, 2022, at Government Science Technical College, Bukuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The student had stabbed the teacher in front of others after an argument over food.
What Led to the Murder?
On the day of the incident, Mr. Dashe was supervising food distribution in the school kitchen. Around 9:30 am, he noticed that Odey Emmanuel tried to collect food twice, which was against school rules. Mr. Dashe confronted him about it and took disciplinary action.
Eyewitnesses said Emmanuel became very angry. He reportedly said things like:
“I shall do it; nobody will stop me” “I must hurt this teacher”
Later in the day, around 2:00 pm, Emmanuel brought out a knife and stabbed Mr. Dashe in the chest, right in front of other teachers and students.
The wounded teacher was rushed to Mercy Seat Hospital, but he died before they arrived.
Court’s Decision
After Emmanuel was arrested, the case went to trial. The Plateau State government, represented by the Attorney-General and a team of lawyers, presented strong evidence including:
- Medical reports
- Witness statements from teachers, students, and police officers
- Police investigations
The judge, Justice S. J. Bakfur, said the evidence clearly showed that Emmanuel planned the attack and was serious about harming the teacher. The judge said that such acts of violence in schools must not be tolerated.
Final Verdict
The court found Emmanuel guilty of culpable homicide, which means he purposely caused the death of another person. This offence is punishable by death under Plateau State law.
Justice Bakfur then sentenced the student to death by hanging.
