Three persons have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command after a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, was found dead in a hotel room in the state.
Uwuigbe reportedly lodged at the hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Sunday, where he was said to have engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said on Tuesday that the lecturer sent the woman to buy water but she returned to find him lying dead in the room.
She said the hotel owner, manager and the woman were arrested in connection with the incident, while investigation was ongoing.
“The command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” Ikoedem said.
She added that the lecturer’s corpse had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary as the police investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member but said the incident occurred outside the institution.
