Grassroots Publishers Back Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid in Edo Stakeholders’ Forum

The Grassroots Newspaper Publishers Network (GNPN), a body of community-based newspaper publishers in Nigeria, has announced its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying his economic and governance reforms are beginning to show positive direction.

The endorsement was made during a two-day South-South stakeholders’ meeting held in Benin City, Edo State. The gathering brought together grassroots publishers, media practitioners and other stakeholders to discuss community journalism, national development and the future of local media in Nigeria.

Organizers of the meeting, Comrade Ike Philip Abiagom and Dr. Chidi Peters, reviewed the current performance of the federal government. They said that although Nigerians are still facing economic challenges, many of the ongoing reforms are laying the groundwork for long-term growth and improved governance.

They added that the government’s policies show efforts to strengthen the economy and improve key sectors needed for national progress. According to them, continuing with the current leadership would allow ongoing programmes to be fully implemented and their benefits felt by more citizens.

The meeting also focused on ways to improve grassroots journalism. Discussions included how to strengthen community reporting, encourage ethical standards, improve collaboration among journalists and support press freedom.

Participants also called for greater unity among publishers and more training opportunities for media workers. They emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in supporting accountability and national development.

The event also highlighted the role of grassroots media in connecting government policies with local communities. Stakeholders agreed that community newspapers remain important in informing citizens and promoting transparency.

At the end of the meeting, participants thanked the Network’s Matron, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme, for her financial and moral support, which helped the event succeed. They described her as a strong supporter of community development and grassroots media growth.

The publishers also praised her contributions to media development and her support for initiatives aimed at improving social and economic conditions at the community level.

They concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening grassroots journalism and promoting national unity. They also pledged to continue encouraging good governance and active citizen participation in democracy.

The meeting ended with a call for journalists in the South-South region to remain professional, ethical and focused on reporting issues that affect everyday Nigerians, especially at the community level.
