Delta Police Arrest Alleged Sender of Gun Connected to Ogidi’s Death

The Delta State Police Command has arrested two persons, including the alleged sender of the Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition connected to the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine “Mine” Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Police sources confirmed that the suspects were transferred to the Effurun Area Command on Wednesday night as investigators intensify efforts to uncover everyone involved in the movement of the firearm and the circumstances surrounding Ogidi’s death.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, one of the arrested suspects is believed to be the individual who allegedly sent the gun from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, through a transport company to Effurun. Ogidi was said to have collected the parcel with the intention of forwarding it to the alleged owner in Sapele before he was intercepted at the Effurun Motor Park.

A source disclosed that authorities are still trying to determine the role of the second suspect, who may have been the driver responsible for transporting the parcel from Yenagoa to Delta State.

“It’s confirmed. They brought in two suspects on Wednesday night,” the source said.

“One of them is the person who sent the gun through a transport line from Yenagoa to Effurun. Mine picked up the parcel to deliver it to the owner in Sapele before he was allegedly killed by ASP Nuhu Usman and others.

“It is still not clear whether the second suspect is the driver who conveyed the parcel, but the sender is definitely among those arrested. Investigations are continuing to identify other persons connected to the case.”

The police authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrests.

The development comes amid growing public outrage over the death of Ogidi, whose killing triggered nationwide condemnation after a disturbing video circulated online showing him handcuffed and pleading for his life moments before he was allegedly shot.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman has been widely accused of carrying out the shooting alongside other officers. Human rights advocates and civil society groups have described the incident as an extrajudicial killing and accused the police of attempting to shield officers linked to the case.

The incident reignited concerns over police accountability and the conduct of tactical units within the Nigeria Police Force.

Efemena Umukoro, Interim Delta State Coordinator of the Social Patriotic Youths Initiative and National Secretary of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), had earlier criticised the police hierarchy, alleging that officers accused of misconduct are often protected through internal cover-ups and transfers rather than prosecution.

According to Umukoro, ASP Usman had previously faced allegations of extortion while serving in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area, including claims that he collected a N2.5 million bribe in connection with the release of a suspect.

Umukoro alleged that instead of being prosecuted over the accusations, the officer was merely redeployed to another police formation in Effurun, where he allegedly continued operating without disciplinary action.

“That is why I will continue to say that the Nigerian Police aided Usman Nuhu to this offence,” Umukoro stated.

Meanwhile, fresh concerns have emerged following reports of another alleged police shooting involving a man identified as Aboy Odili in Asaba. Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, including the victim’s condition and the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The latest developments have further intensified calls for police reform, transparency, and accountability in the handling of misconduct allegations within the force.
