Delta Begins Electric Vehicle Training, Targets Job Creation

The Delta State Government has launched a training programme to equip residents with skills in electric vehicle technology as the state prepares for changes in the transport sector.

The two-day programme, organised in partnership with EV Automobiles Company, was launched in Asaba on Friday by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure.

Oborevwori said the shift from petrol-powered vehicles to electric mobility was gaining momentum globally and urged Delta residents to acquire the skills needed to take advantage of the emerging opportunities.

“I encourage everyone here to take this training seriously. It’s a two-day training. Ask questions and get the needed knowledge in advancing our society,” the governor said.

The governor said the participants could use the training to prepare themselves for new opportunities as the transport industry changed.

Agofure said the state government was also working to provide affordable mass transportation while creating jobs for residents.

He disclosed that the state had ordered 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses, which he said were expected to arrive before December.

“The Governor is serious about developing the transport sector. He has ordered 50 CNG buses and before December, the buses will be in Delta,” Agofure said.

The commissioner said the planned mass transit system would make transportation more affordable while creating employment opportunities for Deltans.

He urged the trainees to take the programme seriously and acquire practical skills that could enable them to participate in the emerging transformation in the transport sector.

The Executive Director of EV Automobiles, Oghenegare Precious, thanked the state government for partnering with the company to train residents in electric vehicle technology.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Odinigwe Daniel Odigie, described the programme as an opportunity for participants to develop skills that could help them create jobs.

“This is an impactful programme as we are moving from job seekers to job creators. This training is necessary for our own benefit as this will help us become employers of labour,” he said.

The organisers said the training would cover electric vehicle maintenance and operation, as well as entrepreneurship opportunities in the emerging green economy.
