A violent clash broke out over the weekend in Emede community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, leaving several people injured and many houses destroyed by fire.
According to reports, a joint security team known as Operation Delta Sweep, made up of personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies, entered the community to arrest a suspected drug kingpin. However, they reportedly faced resistance from some residents.
Sources said the security operatives went to a hotel while searching for the suspect. At the time, guests and youths were celebrating a birthday party at the hotel.
The security team reportedly searched those present and asked to check their mobile phones. Some youths objected to the phone searches, leading to an argument that quickly escalated into a confrontation.
As tensions grew and more people gathered at the scene, security personnel allegedly fired several gunshots to disperse the crowd. Some youths were injured during the incident. One security officer was also attacked by an angry crowd before being rescued.
Facing increasing hostility from the crowd, the security team withdrew from the area and later returned with reinforcements.
Residents claimed that security operatives later entered the community at night, causing destruction and setting fire to the hotel as well as several residential buildings.
Attempts to obtain an official response from the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
