The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has urged Nigerians and lawmakers to strengthen accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in governance as the country celebrates Democracy Day 2026.
In a Democracy Day message released through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Guwor said June 12 remains a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle and a reminder that government must always listen to and serve the people.
According to him, democracy goes beyond voting during elections and should be reflected in the daily actions of leaders through responsible governance and respect for the rule of law.
“Democracy is not just an election every four years. It is daily accountability, respect for the rule of law, and service that improves the lives of ordinary citizens,” he said.
The Speaker noted that State Houses of Assembly have a critical role to play because they are the closest level of government to the people. He said lawmakers must continue to make laws that address citizens’ needs, provide effective oversight, and ensure proper representation at the grassroots.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Guwor observed that 33 years after the historic June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and 27 years into the current democratic era, the country’s democracy has grown stronger. However, he stressed that democratic progress must be measured by the impact it has on people’s lives.
He also highlighted the efforts of the Delta State House of Assembly, saying the 8th Assembly has remained committed to promoting development and good governance through cooperation with key stakeholders.
Guwor commended Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to democratic values despite various challenges facing the nation. He called on elected officials across the country to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities and renew their commitment to public service.
The Conference Chairman further pledged that the Conference of Speakers would continue working with government institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen legislative processes, improve lawmaking, and support policies that promote peace, unity, and national development.
He congratulated Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, legislators, and all Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, while praying for continued peace, progress, and prosperity across the country.
