Alleged Rape: Police Arrest Asaba Content Creator After Woman’s Death

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly drinking a toxic substance.

The police said the suspect was arrested following a petition alleging that the woman was sexually assaulted after travelling to Asaba to attend a content creation training he allegedly promised her.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered an immediate investigation into the case, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the police, the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly invited her for a content creation programme he advertised on his social media platforms.

The command alleged that after she arrived in the state, the suspect took her to a hotel where he allegedly raped and assaulted her.

Police said the woman later returned home in a distressed condition and informed her parents about the alleged incident.

The command further stated that before her death, the woman recorded a video in which she narrated the alleged assault and the emotional trauma she said she suffered.

According to the police, she later drank a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and died despite efforts to save her.

Edafe said detectives commenced investigations immediately after receiving the petition, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

He added that the suspect had made what the police described as useful statements, while investigations were continuing to establish all the facts surrounding the case.

The Commissioner of Police assured the deceased’s family that the investigation would be thorough, professional and impartial.

Oyeniyi also said anyone found culpable at the end of the investigation would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and allow the police to complete their investigation.
