The Delta State Government has donated five operational vehicles to the Delta State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service to improve the movement of correctional officers and strengthen security operations across the state.
The vehicles, popularly known as “Green Marias,” were presented on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Speaking during the presentation, Onyeme said the donation demonstrated the governor’s commitment to supporting security agencies and improving the administration of justice in Delta State.
He said the vehicles would enable correctional officers to respond more quickly to official assignments, improve supervision and coordination, and enhance the overall efficiency of the command.
According to him, effective correctional operations require adequate logistics and dependable transportation for officers to carry out their responsibilities.
He added that the donation aligns with the Enhanced Peace and Security pillar of the MORE Agenda, noting that although the Nigerian Correctional Service is a federal agency, it plays a critical role in protecting lives and maintaining peace in the state.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with federal security agencies to strengthen security and safeguard lives and property across Delta State.
He urged the command to maintain the vehicles properly and ensure they are used strictly for official duties.
Responding on behalf of the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr Sylvester Nwackuche, the Controller of Corrections, Delta State Command, Mr Chuke Idoko, expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for the gesture.
He assured the governor that the vehicles would be put to good use to improve the command’s operations and service delivery.
The presentation was witnessed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, commissioners and other senior government officials.
