Sapele LG Chairman Abeke Regains Freedom After 10 Days in Captivity

Sapele, Delta State, April 23, 2026 — Residents of Sapele erupted in celebration on Monday evening following the release of the abducted Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area, Bright Abeke, who regained his freedom after spending 10 days in captivity.

Abeke was kidnapped on Friday, April 11, when heavily gunmen stormed his hotel, Debrofred Hotel, located along Owumi Road in the timber town. The attackers reportedly arrived in a Range Rover and fired gunshots sporadically to create panic before whisking the council chairman away.

During the attack, a vigilante guard identified as Ufuoma and another individual sustained gunshot injuries, further heightening fears among residents.

Details surrounding Abeke’s release remain sketchy, with no official confirmation on whether a ransom was paid. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, are yet to issue a formal statement on the development as of the time of filing this report.

Efforts to speak with the council chairman were unsuccessful, as sources indicated that he is currently recuperating in an undisclosed location following his ordeal.

The news of his release sparked widespread jubilation across Sapele, with residents expressing relief after days of anxiety over his safety.

Reacting to the development, the Gabriel Sunano Foundation welcomed Abeke’s safe return and commended the efforts of security agencies, government officials, and concerned Nigerians who played roles in securing his freedom.

In a statement, the Foundation praised the professionalism and commitment of the Nigeria Police and other security operatives involved in the operation.

It also lauded the Delta State Government, particularly Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for prioritising the safety of the council chairman and ensuring prompt response during the crisis.

However, the organisation called for intensified efforts to combat kidnapping and broader insecurity in Delta State and across the country, stressing the need to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The abduction and eventual release of the council boss have once again highlighted ongoing security challenges in parts of the Niger Delta region, where incidents of kidnapping for ransom remain a concern.
