The Delta State Police Command and the Oshimili North and Oshimili South Local Government Councils have shut down nine illegal motor parks in Asaba as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion, improve security and restore order in the state capital.
The enforcement exercise, which began on Monday, July 20, also led to the seizure of 45 vehicles operating from unauthorised parks. The impounded vehicles have been handed over to the local government authorities for further action in line with the law.
Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the operation was aimed at removing illegal transport parks believed to be contributing to traffic gridlock, public disorder and other security challenges in Asaba.
He added that security agencies were also concerned about the use of some unregulated parks for criminal activities, including the movement of unchecked parcels disguised as waybills.
According to him, the affected parks include one at Pinnacle Junction along Okpanam Road, two in the Summit area, three around the Koka axis and three at the Head Bridge linking Delta and Anambra states.
Edafe said the operation is part of a wider plan to sanitise the transport sector by ensuring that only government-approved parks and garages operate across Delta State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, said the command would sustain the enforcement exercise and extend it to other parts of the state.
He appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies and urged transport operators and motorists to use only approved motor parks and garages.
