Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has fulfilled his promise to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, with the presentation of a brand-new Toyota Hiace bus to the union in Asaba.
The presentation, which took place in Asaba, was described by the state government and the NUJ as another demonstration of the cordial relationship between the administration and journalists in the state.
Presenting the bus on behalf of the governor, his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, said the gesture was a fulfilment of the governor’s commitment to the union and a reflection of the relationship that had existed between the government and the media.
“This bus donation is to you for the use of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council. This gesture is as a result of the good relationship that we have had over the years,” Ahon said.
The governor expressed optimism that the donation would further strengthen the relationship between his administration and the media, adding that the partnership remained important to the development of Delta State.
He congratulated the NUJ on the acquisition of the vehicle and expressed hope that it would assist the union in its activities and further promote a stronger working relationship between the government and journalists.
For the Delta NUJ, however, the presentation was more than the arrival of a new vehicle. It was also seen as evidence that the governor had kept his word.
The Chairman of the Delta NUJ Council, Mr Chuchill Oyowe, expressed appreciation to Oborevwori for fulfilling the promise, saying the development demonstrated the governor’s commitment to keeping his word.
“We are most grateful. What the Governor has done today is a demonstration of the fact that he promises and he delivers. He made his promise and he has delivered,” Oyowe said.
The NUJ chairman said the union did not take the gesture for granted, stressing that the fact that the governor provided a brand-new, modern Toyota Hiace bus made the donation particularly significant.
“We want to say a big thank you to His Excellency for this gesture. We do not take it for granted, and we believe that it will further cement our cordial working relationship,” he said.
Oyowe also commended the governor for what he described as his developmental efforts across the state, saying the administration still had more opportunities to make an impact before the end of its tenure.
He expressed optimism that the people of Delta State would eventually look back at the administration and remember it for its contribution to their welfare and the development of the state.
The NUJ chairman reaffirmed the union’s commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with the state government, noting that the media valued the partnership while also appreciating the governor’s support for journalists.
He prayed for continued wisdom and strength for Oborevwori as he leads the state, expressing hope that the governor would leave behind a legacy that would be appreciated by future generations.
Oyowe also acknowledged the contributions of the Secretary to the State Government, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads), the Commissioner for Public Information and the Chief Press Secretary in ensuring that the promised vehicle was eventually delivered to the union.
The presentation comes against the backdrop of the important role played by journalists in reporting government activities, informing citizens and providing a platform for public discussion on issues affecting the state.
For the NUJ, the new vehicle is expected to improve the union’s mobility and support its activities across Delta State.
Beyond its immediate practical value, the gesture also carries a political and institutional message: the Oborevwori administration wants its relationship with the media to remain strong.
While journalists have the responsibility to report government activities fairly and independently, government also relies on the media to communicate its policies, programmes and achievements to the public.
The bus donation therefore represents not only a fulfilled promise but also another chapter in the relationship between the Delta State Government and the organised media.
For Oyowe and members of the Delta NUJ, the message from the presentation was straightforward — a promise was made, and it was kept.
