A 16-year-old fencer from Delta State, Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, has won Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s Under-23 epee event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
Esiovwa-Thompson, an indigene of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, achieved the feat after an impressive run against several opponents, including three fencers from India.
The young athlete’s historic victory has attracted the commendation of the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who described the achievement as a source of pride for the state and Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, on Thursday, Oborevwori congratulated Esiovwa-Thompson, praising his talent, determination and composure.
The governor said the fencer’s performance showed the potential of young Nigerians when given the right support and opportunities.
Esiovwa-Thompson, who represented Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, went unbeaten in Pool 4 to secure a bye into the round of 16.
He defeated South Africa’s Mathobela 15-7 in the round of 16 before overcoming an Indian opponent 15-2 in the quarter-final.
In the semi-final, the Delta-born fencer defeated another Indian, Ashwini Shaurya, 15-11 to secure his place in the final.
He then produced a dominant performance against Asian champion Lokesh Verma of India, beating him 15-5 to claim the gold medal.
India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya won the bronze medals.
Reacting to the achievement, Oborevwori said Esiovwa-Thompson had brought honour to Delta State and Nigeria through his performance.
He commended the young athlete for remaining composed despite facing more experienced opponents throughout the competition.
The governor also praised Esiovwa-Thompson’s family, coaches and others who had contributed to his development as a fencer.
Oborevwori assured that his administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at developing young people and promoting sporting excellence in the state.
He said the success of athletes such as Esiovwa-Thompson would inspire other young Deltans to pursue their talents and compete successfully at national and international levels.
The governor urged the teenager to remain focused and continue working towards greater achievements in his career.
He also wished Esiovwa-Thompson more victories while urging him to remain a worthy ambassador of Delta State and Nigeria.
