The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given eligible Nigerians two more weeks to register as voters, extending the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to July 24, 2026.
The commission said the extension was approved to allow more citizens who have not yet registered to take part in the exercise ahead of future elections.
INEC also announced the introduction of a new online self-service registration platform that will enable first-time voters to complete their registration process more conveniently.
The commission had resumed the nationwide CVR exercise in January 2026 after concluding the first phase on December 10, 2025. It had earlier launched online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, before beginning physical registration at designated centres across the country on August 25, 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the decision followed a review of the exercise and consultations with the commission’s state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
Haruna said the registration exercise, which was originally scheduled to end on July 10, will now continue until July 24.
He explained that the extension reflects the commission’s commitment to giving every eligible Nigerian a fair opportunity to be included in the national register of voters.
According to him, the new self-service registration option will become available from Wednesday, July 8, through INEC’s dedicated CVR portal.
Haruna said the online platform will allow eligible first-time voters to begin and complete their registration without visiting an INEC office.
He added that the system is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and other security measures to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the voters’ register.
The commission urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new online registration option.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive and technology-driven voter registration process that makes participation easier for citizens.
