The Delta State Government has approved the purchase of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, the introduction of electric vehicles and the construction of a modern mega bus terminal in Asaba to improve public transportation across the state.
The approvals were made during the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting chaired by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Speaking after the meeting, Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, said the decisions followed a transportation survey carried out in major cities, including Asaba, Warri, Ughelli, Agbor, Sapele, Abraka and Oleh.
According to him, the study showed that more than 19,000 people travel daily across the state, with about 80 percent relying on public transport, while only 20 percent use private vehicles
Agofure said the findings highlighted the nper cent the government to invest more in a reliable and efficient transport system.
He explained that the 50 CNG buses will be used for the state’s MORE Mass Transit Scheme, which is designed to provide safe, affordable and comfortable transportation for residents.
The commissioner added that the approval of electric vehicles demonstrates the government’s commitment to adopting cleaner and more environmentally friendly transport options.
He also announced that the state will build a modern mega bus terminal in Asaba to serve as the main hub for public transportation.
According to him, the terminal will replace the many roadside and informal motor parks around Koka Junction, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve the appearance of the state capital.
Agofure said the government has already secured land for the project and will begin construction once the necessary procedures are completed.
He added that all existing motor parks, including those operated by private transport companies, will eventually be moved to the new terminal.
The commissioner further disclosed that a similar bus terminal will also be built in Warri after receiving approval from the Federal Government.
He said the projects are part of Governor Oborevwori’s efforts to modernise Delta State’s transport system, improve mobility and support economic growth across the state.
