The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned Nigerians against a fake online notice claiming that it issued a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states, including Delta.
The commission said the publication, which also mentioned Zamfara, Gombe, Plateau, Yobe and Kano states, did not originate from it and should be disregarded.
INEC issued the warning in a public notice on Monday, urging members of the public not to share the publication or treat it as an official communication from the electoral body.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice stated.
The commission also dismissed claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states, advising Nigerians to verify election-related information through its official communication channels.
The warning came two days after INEC published its final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections.
It was reported on Saturday that the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states, Ladi Adebutu and Isa Pantami, respectively, were missing from the published lists. The documents did not state the reasons for their omission.
INEC urged Nigerians to obtain accurate information from its website, inecnigeria.org, its verified social media accounts, including @inecnigeria on X and Instagram, and its Facebook page, INEC Nigeria. The commission also listed its news portal as inecnews.com.
For enquiries, the commission provided its call centre number as 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, and email address iccc@inec.gov.ng.
The commission reiterated its commitment to keeping the public accurately informed and urged Nigerians to verify electoral information before sharing it.
