The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, has urged the management of BiG HEART Radio 92.1 FM, Asaba, to use the station to promote truth, unity and development in Delta State.
Guwor gave the charge on Saturday after the official commissioning of the new radio station in Asaba, describing its establishment as a welcome development for the state’s growing media industry.
The commissioning attracted Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, media entrepreneur and publisher, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, and the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, among other dignitaries.
The station was established by an indigene of Asaba, Dr Anthony Idigbe, SAN, as part of his investment in the media sector in Delta State.
Oborevwori, who was billed to commission the station, was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Government House, Dr Michael Osuoza.
The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, was represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Mrs Stella Macaulay.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Guwor said the role of a radio station went beyond broadcasting programmes, stressing that the medium could help educate, inform and unite communities.
“A radio station is more than equipment and a building. It is the voice of the people. It informs, educates, entertains, and unites communities,” he said.
The Speaker, who is also the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, said the growth of Asaba and Delta State had created a need for more credible media platforms.
“Asaba is growing, Delta is growing, and we need more credible voices to complement that growth. BiG HEART RADIO 92.1 FM comes at the right time,” Guwor said.
He commended the promoters of the station for investing in Delta State and creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
Guwor also stressed the importance of the media to governance, saying the press had a responsibility to communicate government policies and programmes while holding public officials accountable.
“Under the present administration, being led by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the media remains a critical partner in telling the Delta story and holding government accountable,” he said.
The Speaker pledged the support and partnership of the Delta State House of Assembly to the new station.
He urged the management and staff to uphold professionalism and responsible journalism in their coverage of events and issues affecting the state.
“I urge you to use this platform responsibly to promote unity, development, and truth,” he said.
Guwor congratulated the proprietor, management and staff of BiG HEART Radio 92.1 FM on the commissioning and expressed optimism that the station would contribute positively to the development of Delta State.
“May this station go on air and remain on air for the good of our people,” he added.
The event was attended by the proprietor’s wife, prominent sons and daughters of Asaba Kingdom, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, as well as family members, friends and business associates.
The commissioning adds another voice to Asaba’s growing media landscape, with the new station expected to provide news, information and other programmes to residents and listeners across its coverage area.
