The Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Emomotimi Guwor, has called for a transparent investigation into the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in Ondo State.
Guwor, who is the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, made the call in a condolence statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, in Asaba.
He described the crash, which reportedly involved 32 people, as a national tragedy and a painful loss to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the country.
Guwor urged the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash and prevent a recurrence.
He said, “We urge relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, to carry out a transparent, comprehensive and technically sound investigation to establish the cause of the crash and to prevent a recurrence.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for directing a full investigation into the incident, saying the move demonstrated the importance attached to the safety of military personnel and aviation.
Guwor condoled with the families of those on board, the Nigerian Air Force, the Federal Government, the Armed Forces and the government and people of Ondo State.
He said the incident had highlighted the sacrifices made by military personnel in protecting the country.
“Incidents like this remind us of the enormous sacrifices our gallant military personnel make daily to keep Nigeria safe and united,” he said.
The Speaker said legislators across the 36 states would continue to support measures aimed at strengthening safety standards and improving the welfare and operational readiness of the Armed Forces.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and for comfort for their families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” Guwor said.
