Experts push solar energy to address Nigeria’s electricity crisis

Solar energy experts have called for stronger partnerships among universities, government agencies, businesses and development partners to expand access to reliable electricity and reduce Nigeria’s energy gap.

The call was made at the 43rd National Solar Energy Forum and Conference, hosted by the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja.

Speaking at the three-day event, the President of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, Dr Sunny Akpoyibo, said Nigeria’s abundant sunshine had yet to translate into reliable electricity for many citizens.

He described the country’s electricity challenges as a major obstacle to economic and social development, urging stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of solar energy.

“The gap is real, its economic cost huge, and the social impact painful, yet, there lies our greatest opportunity,” Akpoyibo said.

He added that solar power was essential for supporting industries, farms, hospitals and schools, as well as achieving the Federal Government’s energy transition plan and climate commitments.

The conference, themed “Bridging Nigeria’s Energy Gap: Accelerating Solar Energy Adoption for Sustainable and National Development,” brought together researchers, policymakers, energy professionals and industry representatives to discuss ways to expand solar energy use.

Akpoyibo said the forum, which had run for more than four decades, provided a platform for stakeholders to examine the country’s energy challenges and develop sustainable solutions.

He expressed hope that the conference’s technical sessions, keynote address, business discussions and exhibitions would produce practical proposals on financing, local manufacturing, the productive use of solar power and youth participation in green jobs.

The event also featured a leadership transition involving the Council for Renewable Energy of Nigeria and the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria.

Fellowship awards were presented to several personalities, including former First Lady Maryam Sani Abacha, the Emir of Giade, Mohammed Sabo Abdulkadir, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Other recipients included Prof. Omonigho Otanocha, Engr. Kelly Ochuko Egode and Rev. Mrs Joan Agboro-Scheil.
