Delta Politics Shifts as Omo-Agege Joins NDC Ahead of 2027 Polls

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially dumped his former party and aligned with the National Democratic Congress, where he also declared his intention to contest the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement personally signed and released on Thursday, Omo-Agege confirmed the development, noting that his decision came shortly after his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He explained that the move followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and key stakeholders across the country.

He said his choice to join the NDC was driven by his conviction that the party provides a stronger platform to advance development and effectively represent the interests of Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria at large.

Omo-Agege further revealed that he intends to work in alignment with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 polls, stressing that growing public demand for accountable and people-centred leadership influenced his political direction.

On his part, Omo-Agege explained that his exit from his former party was the result of careful thought and wide consultations rather than a sudden decision. He also expressed appreciation to several political figures, including Seriake Dickson, Senator Moses Cleopas, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for their roles in discussions leading up to his defection.

Speaking on his senatorial ambition, he said his return to the race for Delta Central was motivated by consistent appeals from constituents who desire stronger representation at the National Assembly. He maintained that his focus is on effective service delivery and driving development across the district.

He also faulted the state of infrastructure and public services in Delta State, arguing that despite significant financial allocations over the years, many communities still struggle with poor roads, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and weak educational facilities.

Omo-Agege noted that Delta State remains richly endowed with resources in oil and gas, agriculture, and human capital, but said these advantages have yet to translate into improved living standards for many residents.

He stated that the National Democratic Congress would intensify efforts to establish strong grassroots structures across Delta State ahead of the 2027 elections, beginning from ward levels to strengthen its political base.

He also pledged that, if elected, he would focus on policies aimed at job creation, improved healthcare delivery, support for small and medium-scale businesses, and boosting agricultural productivity to stimulate economic growth.

Omo-Agege urged young people, women, and traditional rulers to play active roles in the democratic process and remain engaged in shaping the country’s political future.

He further encouraged citizens to obtain and safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards, describing them as essential tools for choosing accountable leadership.

He concluded that the 2027 elections present an opportunity for Nigerians to demand better governance and make informed decisions at the polls.

The statement was issued by his Media Adviser, Sunny Areh.
