Delta Govt Partners NGOs to Fight Malaria with Free Insecticide-Treated Nets

ASABA—The Delta State Ministry of Health and some big helping organizations are getting ready to give out 3.1 million mosquito nets to people all across the state. These special nets, called insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), help protect people—especially children and pregnant women—from malaria, a sickness spread by mosquito bites.

This big plan is part of the 2025 Malaria Elimination Campaign. The campaign is being led by the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and the Society for Family Health (SFH). Their goal is to make sure fewer people in Delta get sick or die from malaria.

At a special meeting with journalists in Asaba, health officials explained how important the media is in spreading the word. They want everyone to know why using the mosquito nets is so important.

Dr. (Mrs.) Philomena Okeowo, the top official at the Delta State Ministry of Health, told reporters, “The media is very important in this fight. You are the voice of the people. Help us tell everyone how we are trying to keep them safe.”

Dr. (Mrs.) Julie Aniah, who is in charge of fighting malaria in Delta, said the campaign will also help journalists learn more about malaria and how to tell people why they should use the nets. But she also warned that politics and not following the rules during the recruitment of workers could cause problems in giving out the nets.

Mr. Daniel Gbue, who is directing the net-sharing project, said, “We want every home in Delta to get at least one mosquito net. These nets are tested and trusted. They keep mosquitoes away and help you sleep well at night.”

Another speaker, Mrs Joke Oadarrme, from the Federal Ministry of Health, said the nets are only for homes, not for hospitals, markets, or schools. She added, “This is a team effort. We need everyone’s help to make sure we win the battle against malaria.”

This campaign will focus on teaching people, being open and honest, and making sure everyone knows how to stay safe. The media will help by spreading the message far and wide.

What is malaria? Malaria is a disease caused by tiny parasites that are spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It can make people very sick, and in serious cases, it can even lead to death. Using treated mosquito nets is one of the best ways to stay safe.

So kids, tell your parents to collect the nets when they arrive—and always sleep under one!
