Delta Assembly backs state police, sends approval to NASS

The Delta State House of Assembly has unanimously approved a constitutional amendment to pave the way for the establishment of state police, with all 23 lawmakers present voting in support of the proposal.

The approval was given during plenary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, presided over by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor. No lawmaker voted against the proposal or abstained.

Following the vote, Guwor directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly’s decision to the National Assembly for further action as part of the constitutional amendment process.

The Speaker said the proposed reform could improve intelligence gathering and help security agencies respond more effectively to threats in local communities.

He said, “For Delta State, this reform holds great promise for protecting lives and property, sustaining peace and creating a safer environment for investment and development.”

Guwor added that the decision aligned with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.

The approval is part of the process for amending the 1999 Constitution to allow states to establish their own police forces. Further constitutional steps at the national level are required before the proposed reform can take effect.
