Chevron Accused of Crude Neglect by Host Communities in Delta

The people of Tsekelewu (also known as Polobubo) Bloc Communities in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State are speaking out — loud and clear. They say they’ve had enough of being ignored and sidelined by oil giant Chevron Nigeria Limited, and they’re now giving the company just 14 days to address their concerns or face peaceful protests.

What’s Happening?

Chevron has been drilling oil in two major areas — Opuekeba and Olero fields — which are located in the Tsekelewu communities’ backyard. But the locals claim that instead of benefiting from the company’s presence, they’ve been marginalized — that means they feel left out and unfairly treated.

According to community leaders, despite years of peaceful cooperation with Chevron, they’ve been:

  • Denied employment opportunities
  • Excluded from supply contracts
  • Shut out of community development discussions

They say Chevron continues to ignore capable local contractors in favor of outsiders and middlemen, which has led to growing anger and mistrust, especially among the youth.

The Protest Letter

In a formal letter sent to Chevron’s General Manager, the community’s Welfare Executives demanded:

  1. Respect for their community leadership and structure
  2. Fair treatment and involvement in contract awards
  3. A stakeholder meeting that includes Chevron, government officials, and community reps — to find lasting solutions

They made it clear: this is a call for justice and fairness, not violence.

“We’ve been peaceful and cooperative for years,” said Paul Toruwei, President of the Bloc Communities. “But enough is enough. Chevron must recognize our rights and allow us to benefit from the wealth generated from our land.”

What Happens If Chevron Ignores Them?

If Chevron doesn’t act within 14 days of receiving the letter, the communities say they will take lawful and peaceful actions to make their voices heard. While they didn’t say exactly what those actions would be, it’s clear the people are serious and united.

Why Should You Care?

This story highlights how communities can stand up for their rights when they feel they are being treated unfairly. It also shows the importance of corporate responsibility — how big companies must treat local communities with respect, fairness, and transparency.

This isn’t just about oil — it’s about jobs, justice, and how people fight to be seen and heard in their own land.
