Man inside court stab lover over marriage proposal

A man identified as Adamu Enock while requesting the refund of his dowry and other expenses incurred over a failed marriage proposal, stabbed his estranged lover within the premises of Yola Criminal Area Court while proceedings are still ongoing.

Adamu, a widower and also a father of three, proposed marriage to his lover Hosea Ashini, a divorced woman with four children, and the marriage failed to occur.

Adamu then approaches the court where he instituted a suit against his lover on the charge of deceitful marriage.

He informed the court that he fell in love with Ashini who accepted his marriage proposal but later declined after he had extended his funds to seal the marriage.

According to reports, Adamu sought the refund of N120,000 he incurred in an attempt to consummate the marriage.

The first hearing of the case came up on February 4th and later adjourned to Thursday, February 18th after the counsel to Ashini pleaded with the judge to allow the parties to resolve the matter.

However, trouble started when Ashini’s counsel, Ibrahim Saidu, later sought for the reversal of the settlement bordering on a refund of all expenses incurred on the failed marriage.

Adamu, angered by the proceedings at the resumed hearing, resorted to self-defense by stabbing Hosea repeatedly with a knife and also stabbed four other persons.

An eyewitness who is familiar with the incident said, “After the settlement, the court adjourned the case to February 18, 2021, for payment. But when they resumed sitting on Thursday 18, the unexpected happened when the counsel to the woman urged the court to reverse the earlier arrangement reached. Alleging that it is not in the best interest of his client.

Though it was learned from the family member of the lover that Adamu had been paid N35, 000 out of the N120, 000 leaving a balance of N85, 000 before the court appearance on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Ashini was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, for treatment while Adamu was apprehended by security men within the court and handed over to the police.

Adamu, who was later arrested and taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which they said, he attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the staircase of the one-story building.

DSP Suleiman Ngurore, spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police command confirmed the arrest stating that “The brief I have is that he was apprehended and taken to the station. All of the five persons he stabbed with a knife sustained some degrees of injuries and the police have taken them to the hospital where they are responding to treatment.

He also said, “The lady is not dead but the injuries are grievous.

However, the State Commissioner of Police has directed a discreet investigation for the law to take its cause.”
