Amori urges civil society groups to help explain government policies to Deltans

The Chief Adviser to the Delta State Governor, Senator Ighoyota Amori, has urged Civil Society Organisations to work closely with the government by helping residents understand its policies and development programmes.

Amori said civil society groups could help bridge the gap between the government and the people by educating citizens, encouraging public participation and providing honest feedback that would improve governance.

He made the call on Wednesday in Asaba while receiving members of the Delta State Civil Society Actors Community, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Civic Engagement and Civil Society, Civicist Rex Anighoro, during a courtesy visit to his office.

The Chief Adviser commended the group for its commitment to promoting civic engagement and maintaining a working relationship with the state government.

According to him, many of the projects and reforms being carried out by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration are not widely appreciated because many residents are unaware of them.

He said government was executing several projects, including roads, bridges and hospitals, but noted that information about these achievements often failed to reach the public effectively.

Amori explained that people were more likely to trust information shared by independent civil society organisations than messages coming directly from government officials, which some often dismiss as propaganda.

He stressed the need for regular engagement between government and civil society, saying such collaboration would help organisations educate the public, support government initiatives where necessary and offer constructive criticism to improve service delivery.

The Chief Adviser also encouraged civil society groups to play active roles in the build-up to the 2027 general elections by promoting peaceful participation, issue-based campaigns and responsible public communication.

“The goal is to ensure continued progress in Delta State. Civil society should continue to educate the people, promote peace, defend the truth and encourage meaningful participation in the democratic process,” he said.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Civicist Rex Anighoro, said the visit was to seek the Chief Adviser’s support and guidance on increasing citizens’ participation through policy communication, voter education, media advocacy and election monitoring ahead of the 2027 polls.

He also briefed Amori on the outcome of a recent security summit organised by the group, which focused on peacebuilding, non-violence education and greater community involvement in ensuring peaceful elections.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to working together to promote good governance, civic education, public enlightenment and sustainable development across Delta State.
