The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 19-year-old university student who was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother during a fight over bathroom slippers.
The incident occurred on June 17, 2026, and involved two brothers, Fejiro, 21, a 200-level university student, and Joseph, 19, a 100-level student.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the brothers got into an argument over a pair of bathroom slippers. The disagreement later developed into a physical fight.
Speaking in a video shared on Facebook on Monday, Edafe said neighbours initially stepped in and separated the brothers. However, the two reportedly continued the fight behind their house.
During the second confrontation, Fejiro allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed his younger brother several times before fleeing the scene.
“The brothers disagreed over bathroom slippers. Neighbours separated them, but they later went behind the house and continued fighting. The elder brother allegedly stabbed the younger one multiple times and ran away,” Edafe said.
Joseph was later confirmed dead from his injuries.
Police said the suspect remains at large, and efforts are ongoing to arrest him. Authorities added that he is expected to face murder charges once apprehended.
Edafe described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy for the family, noting that the parents have now lost one son and could see the other face prosecution.
He also dismissed suggestions that the incident was caused by spiritual forces, saying it may have been linked to drug abuse or cult-related activities.
“Some people may say they were possessed, but I do not believe that. It could be drug abuse or cultism. When he is arrested, he will have the opportunity to explain what happened,” he said.
The police spokesperson urged parents to pay close attention to the upbringing of their children and expressed concern over how a minor disagreement could end in such a tragic loss of life.
Police investigations are continuing as efforts to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect intensify.
