Tributes Pour In as Sir Israel Ogbue Is Buried in Delta

Tributes flowed freely on Friday as family members, political leaders, and well-wishers gathered to bid farewell to Sir Israel Chinwuba Ogbue KSC, who was laid to rest in Delta State after a long and impactful life spanning nearly a century.

The funeral service for the late patriarch, born February 18, 1927, and who passed on his 99th birthday on February 18, 2026, was held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Onicha Olona. The service was officiated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Asaba, Rt. Revd. Kingsley Obuh, who led prayers and delivered a message centred on service, faith, and legacy.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ebele Ogbue described the deceased as a man of remarkable achievements whose life left an enduring mark on his community and beyond. He said that although the family is comforted by the belief that their father has gone to rest in a better place, his absence will be deeply felt.

“Our father lived an accomplished life and left a strong legacy. No matter how old he was, we will still miss him. We are proud to have had a father who loved his people and made a lasting impact,” he said.

The family highlighted his virtues, describing him as a disciplined, hardworking, and God-fearing man who placed great value on integrity and education. They noted that his love for his family remains evident in the values he instilled in them.

A Bible reading from Revelation Chapter 7 was delivered by Olisaemeka Ogbue, offering a message of hope and eternal rest. The passage spoke of a great multitude before God’s throne, symbolising peace and salvation for the faithful.

In his sermon, Bishop Obuh paid glowing tribute to the late Ogbue, describing him as a devoted servant of God and a committed member of the Anglican Church. He noted that as a Knight of the church, the deceased contributed significantly to the growth of the church and the welfare of his community.

“We thank God for a life well spent. He served God and humanity wholeheartedly, dedicating his time, energy, and resources to the service of others,” the bishop said.

He urged those in attendance to emulate the virtues of the deceased, stressing that true greatness lies in selfless service and positive impact on society.

The event drew several high-profile dignitaries, including Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and former governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Also present were Senator Ned Nwoko, members of the House of Representatives such as Victor Nwokolo and Ngozi Okolie, alongside other political office holders, business leaders, and community figures.

Among those connected to the family is Tony Elumelu, Chairman of United Bank for Africa, who is a son-in-law of the late Sir Israel Ogbue, further reflecting the prominence and far-reaching ties of the family.

Attendees described the late Ogbue as a respected elder statesman, a bridge-builder, and a man whose influence extended across different spheres of society.

The gathering also reflected the wide network of relationships he built over the years, with many noting that his legacy of integrity, faith, and service will continue to inspire future generations.

Family members expressed their commitment to preserving his memory by upholding the values he lived for, while friends and associates recalled his contributions to community development and nation-building.

As the final rites were concluded, mourners celebrated a life widely regarded as fulfilled, with many agreeing that Sir Israel Ogbue’s legacy will endure for years to come.
