Oko Traditional Council Backs Nwabueze’s Assembly Bid in Delta

A new political momentum is building in Delta State following the formal entry of Hon. Kelvin Chukwudum Nwabueze into the race for the Oshimili South Constituency seat in the Delta State House of Assembly, with strong backing from his community.

The declaration, which took place on Saturday in Oko, Oshimili South Local Government Area, drew party faithful, traditional leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders, turning what began as a routine announcement into a significant political gathering. The councillor used the occasion to outline his vision and rally support for what he described as a people-driven movement.

Nwabueze, who is currently serving as a councillor, said his decision to contest was informed by growing calls from constituents for more responsive and accountable representation at the state level. He emphasised that his ambition is rooted in service rather than personal gain.

“This is a call to service and responsibility. It is about responding to the needs of our people who desire leadership that listens, understands, and delivers,” he told supporters at the event.

The highlight of the gathering was the endorsement by the Oko Traditional Council, which openly declared its support for his candidacy. The council described Nwabueze as a committed son of the soil whose leadership at the grassroots level has earned him credibility and trust within the community.

In a message delivered during the ceremony, the traditional institution praised his accessibility and dedication to development, noting that his track record in local government has distinguished him among his peers.

Observers say such endorsements from traditional authorities often play a key role in shaping political outcomes, particularly in constituencies where community influence remains strong.

Nwabueze, while speaking on his qualifications, said his experience as a councillor has equipped him with a deep understanding of the challenges facing the people, including unemployment, infrastructure gaps, and limited access to opportunities.

“I am prepared for this responsibility. I understand the issues affecting our people and I am ready to translate them into practical solutions through legislation and advocacy,” he said.

He outlined his priorities to include youth empowerment, infrastructure development, improved access to education, and stronger engagement between elected officials and constituents.

The event also attracted a wide range of political actors, including ward executives of the All Progressives Congress, community elders, women leaders, and youth representatives, many of whom pledged their support and promised to mobilise voters ahead of the election.

The show of unity at the gathering is being seen as an early sign of strong grassroots backing, which could play a crucial role as the contest for Oshimili South begins to take shape.

Political analysts note that while the race is still in its early stages, the combination of local endorsement and visible support structures may give Nwabueze an advantage as campaigns intensify.

As the political season progresses, attention will shift to how effectively he expands his support base across the constituency and translates early momentum into electoral success in what is expected to be a keenly contested race.
