Delta State to Construct SPU Base, 25 Police Divisional Headquarters Across the State

Asaba, Delta State – The Delta State Government has approved the construction of a Nigeria Police Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base to enhance security operations across the state. The approval is part of a series of infrastructure projects aimed at boosting security, improving road networks, and strengthening public institutions.

Speaking to journalists after the State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, explained that the projects will span all 25 local government areas and are aligned with the Federal Government’s proposed policy on state policing. He emphasised that these initiatives are part of the state administration’s ongoing efforts to provide safer communities while facilitating socio-economic development through modern infrastructure.

Aniagwu added that the approval of these projects demonstrates the state government’s commitment to proactive governance, stating that well-maintained roads and robust security infrastructure are key to attracting investment, facilitating mobility, and enhancing the quality of life for residents. He confirmed that the approvals were granted during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Road Construction and Rehabilitation Projects Across Delta

Significant road projects approved include:

Okpe Local Government Area: Rehabilitation of Aghalokpe–SPDC–Adagbrassa–Aragba Road and adjoining streets; Okotomewo/Oviri Court/Adeje Road asphalt overlay.

Oshimili North and Asaba: Construction of Barrister Omamuzo Erebe and Eze Akporube Streets; reconstruction of major roads and cutting of the hill at Asaba Airport for better access.

Asaba City: Construction of Asagba Palace Road (off Nnebisi Road), GBC Murphy Avenue with spur to Chief Ugwuja Close/Nze Francis Road, Chris Abudeyi Street, and Ogbeeshi Monochie Street.

Sapele: Rehabilitation and reconstruction of Powerline Road; construction of Tutulane/Obodokwu Road.

Warri axis: Reconstruction of Warri Internal Ring Road Phase 2, Trans-Warri Ode-Itsekiri Road, Orient Drive and Orient Way, Enerhen Police Station Road, Aladja Avenue Road, Sir Paul Awoboboe Close, River Road resurfacing, and Old Okoko Road Phase One.

Udu Local Government Area: Rehabilitation of Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road, erosion control along Ekakpamre/Ekrokpe–Usiefrun/Orhuwhorun roads, and internal/external roads at Udu Harbour Market. Other roads include Igbogidi Road, Udu Market Access Road, and Tipper Road leading to the Ethiope River.

Ughelli axis: Extension of Imoniyame Road, construction of Okwagbe internal roads, Imode Street, Olori Road, and internal roads in Patani.

Ethiope East and West: Reconstruction of Eku–Osubi Road Phase 2, construction of Chief Ogefere, Eseme, and Oswotu Close in Abraka, Jesse–Boboroko Road, and Direct Labour Agency Road in Oghara.

Ika North-East and South: Construction of Asuen Road (Owa-Ekei), Obi Ifeanayi Chukwu Road (Mbiri), Idumuigwe Road and Ogebe-Aku Road (Akumazi), Ugbala Road (Owa-Alero), and Ekuku–Agbor/Okpe–Abavo Road Phase 2.

Riverine areas: Macaulay and Mitubiri Roads (Bomadi), internal roads in Odimodi and Ogulagha (Burutu), and Torugbene–Ojobo Road with a spur to Ojobo Town.

Isoko North and South: Emese Road (Urude), Otor-Igho Township Road reconstruction, construction of Godwin Ogorugba, Eduje and Matthew Enarube Streets, and Oteri–Igbide–Emede Road reconstruction.

Ndokwa East and West: Construction of Ogbedigbo Afọr Road (with spur to Obi Palace Road), Ebendo–Iyasele–Ashaka Road reconstruction, Ogbe-Ogume–Ebendo Road Phase 1, and access roads into the Kwale Free Trade Zone.

Other Infrastructure Initiatives

Beyond roads, the council also approved:

Construction of male and female hostels in state-owned universities.

Renovation of magistrate, area, and district customary courts across Delta State.

Construction of five judges’ quarters in Osubi and prototype judges’ quarters with auxiliary facilities in Asaba to improve judicial welfare.

Completion of the Senate/Administrative Building at Delta State University, Abraka, to enhance administrative efficiency.

Aniagwu, who was flanked by key commissioners and government officials including the Attorney-General Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN), Commissioner for Higher Education Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Commissioner for Housing Hon. Godknows Angele, Chief Press Secretary Sir Festus Ahon, and Technical Assistant Engr. Bob Nakpodia, said the approvals reflect the administration’s dedication to building strong institutions, improving public safety, and providing modern infrastructure for effective governance.

He concluded by reiterating that the state government remains committed to ensuring that security, road networks, and essential facilities meet the needs of Delta residents while supporting sustainable development across the state.
