The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has called for stronger support for women through digital storytelling and online visibility, stressing that sharing women’s stories can open doors to opportunities and inspire social change. This call was made during activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day.
The event, which was held on March 11, 2026, at the DOPF Secretariat in Asaba, brought together women from government agencies, civil society organisations, professional associations, and media houses. Under the theme “Give to Gain: Empowering Women Through Digital Storytelling,” the forum highlighted the role of digital platforms in amplifying women’s voices.
Delivering the keynote address, former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, Mrs Patricia Gbemudu, explained that digital storytelling can transform women’s visibility, showcase their talents, and create greater professional and social opportunities. She emphasised that the concept of #GiveToGain encourages women and institutions to intentionally support each other by creating spaces for their voices to be heard.
“Digital storytelling is more than sharing experiences online; it is about building confidence, preserving achievements, and inspiring others,” Gbemudu said. She urged women to use social media and other online tools to showcase their skills, entrepreneurial efforts, and leadership potential, stressing that such visibility could significantly expand opportunities.
Gbemudu further noted that empowering women through digital platforms requires deliberate action: mentorship, training, and resources must be provided to help women tell their own stories effectively. She encouraged women not to hide their personal or professional journeys, saying that sharing them could motivate and inspire countless others.
Echoing these sentiments, the Delta State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Comrade Mrs Tracy Omamode Ikolomi, said storytelling remains one of the most effective tools for shaping public perception, preserving cultural values, and driving social change. She commended DOPF for its strategic role in promoting responsible journalism and amplifying voices that contribute to national development.
“The focus on women’s empowerment through storytelling is timely and vital,” Ikolomi said. “Sharing women’s achievements and challenges boosts confidence, promotes inclusiveness, and encourages greater participation in leadership and nation-building.”
Also speaking, the State President of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS), Comrade Mrs Margaret Jeku Amuyiwa, represented by the council’s secretary, Mrs Nzemeka Juniana, highlighted the importance of investing in the education and development of the girl-child. She praised the resilience and contributions of women in Delta State and across Nigeria, adding that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and the nation.
Amuyiwa further urged stakeholders to prioritise initiatives that protect women’s rights and create growth opportunities. She also called on women to support one another through mentorship, unity, and collective advocacy rather than undermining each other.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Delta State Chapter, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo, described the #GiveToGain theme as inspiring and relevant. She highlighted the media’s powerful role in shaping narratives, influencing policies, and amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard. She urged journalists and digital publishers to continue telling impactful stories that break barriers to gender equality and inspire societal action.
The event’s Secretary, Mrs Josephine Omodior, explained that the #GiveToGain theme reflects the forum’s belief that storytelling has the power to challenge stereotypes and showcase both the successes and struggles of women. She noted that sincere support—through mentorship, opportunities, or platforms—multiplies impact and strengthens communities.
Chairman of the Delta Online Publishers Forum, Emmanuel Enebeli, appreciated the organising committee, forum members, and attendees, noting the increasing presence of women journalists and publishers in the forum. He reaffirmed DOPF’s commitment to initiatives that promote gender inclusion and social development through responsible digital journalism.
The celebration concluded with entertainment, group photographs, and renewed calls for collaboration to ensure women’s voices continue to be amplified across digital platforms and media channels.
