Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end an illustrious career of nearly 15 years representing Nigeria at the highest level.
Musa announced in an emotional message addressed to Nigerians and fans of the Super Eagles, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country and reflecting on a journey he described as meaningful and unforgettable.
The Kano-born forward said wearing the green and white jersey was always a source of pride for him, from his very first call-up to the national team. He recalled that his journey with Nigeria began at a young age when he was invited simultaneously to the U-20, U-23 and senior national teams, a period he described as demanding but fulfilling.
“Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about,” Musa said, adding that despite playing club football across different parts of the world, Nigeria always remained home to him.
Musa retires as the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football, having made 111 appearances for the Super Eagles. He described the achievement as a great honour and said every appearance came with a deep sense of responsibility.
“I did my best to give everything I had, whether things were going well or not, because playing for Nigeria was always bigger than me,” he stated.
Among the highlights of his international career, Musa pointed to Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a defining moment. He also reflected on his performances at the FIFA World Cup, where he scored memorable goals against Argentina and Iceland.
The former Leicester City forward is Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history, with four goals at the global tournament, a feat he said he remains deeply grateful for.
Musa also spoke about his time as captain of the Super Eagles, describing it as a period that taught him responsibility, patience and selflessness.
“Wearing the armband was never about being in charge. It was about helping the team, supporting younger players, and standing up for the badge,” he said, adding that his commitment to Nigeria never wavered despite criticism and challenging moments.
He expressed appreciation to his former teammates, coaches, backroom staff and football administrators for their support throughout his career. Musa also thanked Nigerian fans at home and abroad for standing by him both in stadiums and on television screens.
“As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know I gave my best, and I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward,” he said.
Musa concluded his message with a note of loyalty and pride, declaring that his bond with the national team remains unbroken.
“Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” he said.
Ahmed Musa remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished footballers, remembered not only for his goals and records but also for his leadership and long-standing commitment to the Super Eagles.
