National Shock as Buhari, Nigeria’s Ex-President, Dies at 81

LONDON, UK – Nigeria has lost one of its most well-known leaders. Former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 81. He died this afternoon in a private hospital in London, where he had been receiving medical care.

The sad news was first shared on social media by Bashir Ahmad, one of Buhari’s former aides. It was later confirmed by Garba Shehu, a spokesperson who worked closely with the president during his time in office.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement said.

Buhari was a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army. He first became Head of State in 1983 after a military takeover and ruled until 1985. Many years later, he returned as a democratically elected President, serving two full terms from 2015 to 2023.

During his presidency, Buhari focused on fighting corruption, improving the economy, and battling insurgent groups like Boko Haram. His time in office was filled with both praise and criticism, but many saw him as a strong and disciplined leader.

Although Buhari had kept a low profile since leaving office in 2023, his death has shocked many Nigerians. People from across the country — including political leaders, citizens, and world figures — have started sending in their condolences and tributes.

The Federal Government is expected to announce more details about his burial, tributes, and national honors soon.

May his soul rest in peace.
