May D, a Nigerian singer, has shared the story of why he stopped working with Psquare, the famous music duo.
May D joined their music label, Square Records, in 2011 but left in 2012 after some disagreements. He talked about his experience in a preview of a podcast called the Honest Bunch.
One major problem started when Psquare shot the music video for their song Chop My Money with Akon, a popular American-Senegalese artist. May D said he was not included at first. Akon, however, refused to shoot the video without him, so May D had to travel to America to join them.
In America, Akon offered May D some exciting music deals and promised to fly him back to the U.S. later. But when May D returned to Nigeria, he told Psquare about Akon’s offers. He believes this caused tension between them.
May D also said Psquare didn’t plan to sign him to their label initially. They only wanted to help him, as they had done for other artists like J Martins. Things got worse after he shared details about Akon’s offers, leading to the end of their working relationship.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have told them,” May D said, reflecting on the experience.
