SMEDAN Finally Reaches Ogwashi-Uku, ODA Applauds President Tinubu’s Commitment to Grassroots Development

Ogwashi-Uku, September 5, 2024 – For the first time in years, the Ogwashi-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Government Area is benefiting from the programs of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), a move that has earned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commendations from local leaders.

Speaking at the town hall during a SMEDAN-organized training and empowerment program, Mr. Sunny Elue Adigwe, National Secretary of the Ogwashi-Uku Development Association (ODA), expressed his gratitude to the President and SMEDAN for bringing economic opportunities to the long-neglected region. Flanked by ODA’s First Vice President, Mr. John Nwaekete, and other executives, Adigwe highlighted the historical exclusion of the area from such federal initiatives.

“We thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finally recognizing the plight of our people. This is the first time we’ve been included in SMEDAN programs, and we promise to maximize the resources provided to us for the benefit of the entire community,” Adigwe stated.

Mr. Charles Odii, the Director General of SMEDAN, also addressed the participants, explaining that the government is taking a fresh approach to its empowerment initiatives. Instead of merely distributing funds, the program now emphasizes training, feedback analysis, and ongoing support to ensure sustainable business growth.

“What we’re witnessing today is just the beginning. President Tinubu has approved ₦50 billion for nano businesses—small enterprises with fewer than three employees and an annual turnover of under ₦3 million. Our aim is to foster productivity, not just by giving grants, but by equipping beneficiaries with the tools they need to succeed,” Odii said.

He introduced the “Business Model Canvas” as the central framework for business success, explaining key aspects such as customer relationships, key partners, and unique selling points, which are vital for nano businesses to thrive.

The program was met with enthusiasm from the beneficiaries, who expressed their gratitude to both the presidency and SMEDAN for the opportunity. They vowed to use the training and grants effectively and to extend their knowledge to others in the community.

With this new empowerment effort, Ogwashi-Uku’s local economy is expected to see a boost as businesses flourish under the guidance and support of the federal government and SMEDAN.
