The Controller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (CGIS), Mr. Mohammed Babandede, has said the traveling certificate of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), will be replaced with biometric cards.
This was made known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), by the newly appointed spokesperson of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Assistant Controller (AC) Amos Okoi, on Monday in Lagos.
According to Okpu, individual data will be linked with the new biometric card, a feature that the ECOWAS traveling certificate does not possess.
He said, “The new biometric card will encompass all information about the user.”
According to Okpu while quoting the CGIS said, “The biometric card advancement remains cardinal to Nigeria’s security architecture and economic development.”
“The service would involve traditional institutions to gather more information on migration management.”
“For instance, no foreigner must sojourn in the country beyond 90 days without officially registering with NIS.
“NIS will involve traditional institutions and other relevant groups and systems to gather first-hand information that will help the service in security management,’’ he added.
