Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Wednesday, June 12, confer national honours on selected members of the National Assembly as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday by the spokesman of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi Jr.
According to the statement, the highlight of the day will be a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly, which will bring together lawmakers from both the Senate and the House of Representatives. President Tinubu is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour and will deliver a major address during the session.
“The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by Mr President,” Rotimi said.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi noted that the event represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He emphasized that since returning to civilian rule in 1999, the National Assembly has played a crucial role in promoting democratic values, ensuring accountability in governance, and advancing the nation’s development.
He also called on Nigerians to use this year’s Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect, rekindle patriotism, and strengthen their commitment to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous country.
Democracy Day, observed every June 12, commemorates the 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola, which was later annulled by the military. The day serves as a symbol of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy and the continued efforts to uphold freedom and justice in the country.
