What residents of Ogooluwa community, Akiode Ibogun, Ogun State, initially saw as a shocking and unexpected tragedy has raised questions about whether warning signs were missed before a husband allegedly killed his wife and later died himself.
The couple, Bidemi Odukoya, a shepherd of the Celestial Church of Christ, Iri Orun Parish, and his wife, both died on Monday, August 31, after a reported midnight domestic dispute.
They were buried beside their three-bedroom bungalow in the community on the same day.
However, accounts from some residents suggest that the couple may have had a history of marital disagreements before the incident, with one neighbour alleging that their frequent fights had previously led to police intervention.
The development has left residents of the community struggling to understand how a dispute between a couple they regarded as friendly and respectful could end in two deaths.
The Baale of Akiode, Chief Taiwo Akiode, described the incident as unprecedented in the community.
He said he was alerted around 3am that the shepherd had allegedly attacked his wife.
According to him, residents had first contacted the police before informing him about the incident.
“I was told that the Shepherd had killed his wife, that he macheted her. I could not believe my ears until we got to their residence and met the woman in a pool of her blood,” Akiode said.
He said a wound suspected to have been caused by a machete was seen on the woman, while residents also reported that a wooden stool had been used in the attack.
The police later visited the scene and took photographs, according to the community leader.
Akiode said Odukoya was no longer at the residence when residents and the police arrived.
A few hours later, the community reportedly received information that the shepherd had died after allegedly throwing himself in front of a moving truck at Coker Junction, along the Ifo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The Baale said residents sent some people to verify the report before the police in Ifo took over the matter.
“Some people at Ifo told us that when the deceased got to the expressway, he was crossing the expressway back and forth repeatedly. He later sat on the divider, after which he saw an oncoming truck and jumped before it and died,” he said.
The wife was buried around 5pm, while her husband’s remains were brought back to the community later in the evening and buried beside her.
While the Baale said he had never known the couple to be quarrelsome, another resident gave a contrasting account.
A neighbour, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oseni, said the couple had allegedly been involved in repeated domestic fights and that she had previously assisted the late woman after one of the incidents.
“Sincerely, Mummy Daniel and her husband, who we fondly called Iri Orun, have always engaged in domestic fights. Recently, I had to help take care of the wife after their usual fight,” Oseni said.
She alleged that the police had previously intervened in their marital dispute and that residents believed the matter had been settled.
Oseni said the couple had reportedly stopped speaking to each other since June following another disagreement.
She recalled that it was the couple’s 14-year-old first son, Daniel, who alerted her around 2am after allegedly realising that his father had attacked his mother.
According to her, she and another neighbour rushed to the couple’s residence.
“By the time myself and one other neighbour got to the residence of the couple, we discovered the lifeless body of Mummy Daniel with a broken head, all covered in blood, on the floor,” she said.
Oseni alleged that Odukoya was holding a cutlass when they arrived.
She said the shepherd allegedly told her that he was also “as good as gone” before entering the house.
The neighbour said she did not know that he had subsequently left the community until news of his death reached them.
The youth leader of the community, Seun Adelana, also linked the reported dispute to allegations of infidelity involving both partners.
He said residents had heard allegations that Odukoya accused his wife of having an affair, while there were also claims that the shepherd was involved with another woman.
“Allegations of infidelity from both the husband and wife were said to have been the major reason responsible for this sad event,” Adelana said.
However, the claims about the couple’s relationship could not be independently verified.
Another community leader, the Asiwaju of Ibogun Akiode, Chief Oluwasegun Adeboye, said residents only began hearing more details about the couple’s marital problems after their deaths.
The 76-year-old said residents were also told that the couple had taken their dispute to court and had been advised to return home and attempt to resolve their differences.
According to him, the couple were reportedly expected to return to court on Wednesday, September 2, but the tragedy occurred two days earlier.
“It was after the tragedy that we began to hear that they were given to frequent fights and all that,” Adeboye said.
The community leader said some residents had also attributed the incident to spiritual causes, although there was no evidence presented to establish such claims.
For the Baale, however, the tragedy should serve as a warning to couples facing serious marital problems.
Akiode urged couples to seek help before disagreements escalate into violence.
“We should know that even if we disagree as couples, it should not be to the extent that life will be lost,” he said.
He advised couples experiencing persistent conflict to seek counselling and other forms of help rather than allowing their disagreements to worsen.
“We should see ourselves as partners and we must build our relationship on genuine love. We should also not wait for things to degenerate if we are having challenges with our marriage. We should seek help and counselling before things get out of hand,” he added.
The incident has also left the community mourning the loss of two people whom residents had known for years.
Akiode said the couple had lived in the area for about nine or 10 years and were generally regarded as friendly and respectful.
He described the incident as something residents never expected to happen in their community.
The police, meanwhile, said investigations were ongoing to establish the facts surrounding the deaths.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, ASP Opeyemi Oluborode, said the command was aware of the incident.
“The command is very much aware of the case. The case file is currently being transferred to the SCID for diligent investigation into knowing the actual facts surrounding the sad incidents,” he said.
As the investigation continues, residents are left with the difficult question of whether earlier interventions could have prevented the fatal outcome.
For a community that had known the couple for nearly a decade, the two fresh graves beside their home now stand as a painful reminder of how unresolved domestic conflicts can have devastating consequences.
