KOGI PRIMARIES: GUNMEN INTERRUPT VOTING PROCESS, INJURE MANY.

By Stanley Anamali:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election which held in Lokoja, Kogi State capital yesterday, at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium, ended with sporadic shooting by unknown gunmen.

The race was closely contested by former governor, Capt Idris Wada, his younger brother, Musa Wada, son of former Kogi Governor, Ibrahim Idris, and Senator Dino Melaye.

Others in the contest are Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, Joe Erico Ameh and Victor Adoji. Four other aspirants earlier cleared for the primaries reportedly stepped down from the race Monday night.

According to reports, over 2,500 delegates from across the 21 local government areas participated in the exercise to elect the flag-bearer of the party for the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The accreditation of delegates had been followed by five minutes address of the delegates before the commencement of the actual voting.

After voting and sorting out of voting materials commenced, some unknown people heavily armed stormed the stadium and started shooting sporadically.

An eye witness said the shooting started from outside the stadium but they later gained entrance into the main bowl of the stadium, firing several gun shots into the air.

Delegates, aspirants, journalists and even some security men had to run for their dear lives as they could not withstand the situation.

Several people were injured following the sporadic shooting as they tried to make their way out of the venue to avoid being killed.
