Judiciary workers’ union wins top honours at Delta Workers’ Day

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Delta State has been adjudged the most peaceful and most mobilised union during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in the state.

The union’s chairman, Comrade Taye Kenny Ukoruvi, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after the May Day celebration held at the Cenotaph in Asaba.

Ukoruvi said the recognition marked a turning point for the union, noting that efforts were ongoing to further strengthen workers’ participation and welfare within the judiciary sector.

According to him, the essence of labour unions is to bring workers together, reduce stress, and promote unity, especially at a time when workers are facing rising economic hardship.

He said, “Workers are going through a lot. The minimum wage no longer meets the cost of living. This is why we use occasions like Workers’ Day to bring them together, let them fraternise, relax, and return to work re-energised.”

The JUSUN chairman said the union mobilised members from across the 25 local government areas of the state for the celebration, describing the turnout as impressive.

He added that there was no major difference in the union’s approach, but stressed that his leadership remained focused on protecting the interest of grassroots workers and ensuring improved welfare.

Ukoruvi noted that JUSUN’s recognition as the most peaceful union was a reflection of its internal unity and disciplined membership.

He said the union would continue to maintain peace while also drawing attention to the challenges facing judiciary workers in the state.

He, however, identified poor housing as one of the major challenges confronting civil servants, noting that high rent and lack of affordable accommodation had worsened living conditions for workers.

He called on the state government to establish a dedicated housing scheme for judiciary staff and other civil servants to ease the burden of accommodation.

“Rent is too high compared to salaries. Many workers cannot afford decent accommodation. We are appealing to the government to consider a housing programme for judicial staff,” he said.

Ukoruvi reaffirmed the union’s commitment to workers’ welfare and pledged continued collaboration with government to improve service delivery in the judiciary sector.

The 2026 Workers’ Day celebration was held at the Cenotaph in Asaba, with various labour unions across the state in attendance.
