Insecurity: Four Suspects Shot Dead Hours After Protest in Abraka

Abraka, Delta State — Just hours after peaceful protests were held by residents of Abraka over the increasing cases of kidnappings and killings, four suspected kidnappers were shot dead during a police operation early this morning.

The operation was carried out by a joint team involving officers from the Abraka Police Patrol Team, local hunters, vigilante groups, and anti-cult volunteers. According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, the team engaged the suspects in a fierce gun battle, leading to the death of four individuals, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

During the operation, the security team recovered an AK-47 rifle and 13 rounds of live ammunition. A preliminary investigation revealed that one of the dead suspects had been linked to a recent kidnapping case. The victim, who had been rescued shortly before the raid, identified the suspect as the leader of the gang that kidnapped him.

This action by the security forces came just after community members took to the streets in a peaceful protest, demanding government intervention to tackle the growing insecurity in the area.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, praised the courage and teamwork shown by the operatives. He encouraged them to keep up the momentum and assured the public that the police remain committed to strengthening their partnership with communities in the fight against crime.

CP Olufemi also urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious movement or persons to the authorities. He provided emergency contact numbers for the police command: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.

Human rights activist, Comrade Efemena Umukoro, also commended the security forces, saying, “I salute the bravery of the police and hunters. The earlier these criminals are brought to justice, the better for everyone in Abraka and nearby communities.”

As the community reacts to this development, many residents are hopeful that this marks the beginning of improved security and peace in the region.
