Delta Partners NIPCO to Launch CNG Stations, Targets Cheaper Transportation

The Delta State Government has taken a major step toward reducing transportation costs and promoting clean energy with the commissioning of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Asaba and Warri.

The project, executed by NIPCO Gas Limited, is expected to provide a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to petrol and diesel for motorists across the state.

Representing the Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, described the initiative as a critical foundation for the state’s transition to CNG-powered transportation.

He noted that the idea of introducing CNG buses and tricycles was conceived over a year ago, stressing that building the right infrastructure was essential before implementation.

“Without this infrastructure, we cannot achieve our goals. This station represents a fundamental building block for the CNG programme in Delta State,” he said.

Emu revealed that the stations in Asaba and Warri mark the beginning of a broader rollout, adding that the government is open to partnerships that will expand CNG infrastructure across the state.

According to him, Delta’s size and growing population require multiple stations to ensure accessibility. He added that beyond dispensing gas, the stations would also offer vehicle conversion services, enabling more residents to switch from petrol-powered vehicles to CNG.

Declaring the facility open, he said the project had already generated strong public interest, with many residents eager for its operation.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, described the project as a “game-changer,” particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies.

He explained that CNG provides a more affordable alternative to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), making it beneficial for both individuals and businesses.

“This initiative is a major step toward a more sustainable, affordable, and eco-friendly future. It reflects our commitment to cleaner energy and reduced transportation costs,” he said.

Agofure added that the project aligns with the administration’s development agenda, which prioritizes innovation, environmental responsibility, and improved living standards. He also commended the governor’s leadership and praised NIPCO Gas Limited for delivering the project on schedule.

Also speaking, Victor Omoniyi, the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Transport, commended NIPCO Gas Limited for successfully completing the project within the scheduled timeframe.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the state government and the company, describing it as a key factor in the project’s timely delivery.

Omoniyi noted that the initiative is expected to significantly improve transportation systems in the state while promoting energy sustainability. He expressed optimism that the project would achieve its objectives and contribute to economic development, particularly through cleaner energy use and more efficient mobility.

He added that the event attracted stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, who gathered to witness the commissioning and reaffirm their support for similar infrastructure projects. The ceremony concluded with goodwill messages and safe travel wishes to attendees.

Earlier, the Project Manager of NIPCO Gas Limited, Achibe Victor Attah, said the company was proud to pioneer CNG technology in Nigeria.

He disclosed that the Asaba and Warri stations have a combined capacity of 40,000 standard cubic metres of gas per day, enough to serve over 2,000 vehicles, including tricycles.

Attah attributed the rising cost of petrol and diesel to factors such as subsidy removal and global tensions, stressing that CNG offers a more stable and cost-effective alternative.

He commended the Delta State Government for its proactive approach, noting that the state is among the first in Nigeria to embrace such a partnership.

“Delta State took a bold step by approaching us for this collaboration. While these two stations may not be sufficient, they represent a strong beginning, and we are open to further expansion,” he said.

The commissioning of the CNG stations marks a significant milestone in Delta State’s efforts to modernize its transport system, reduce reliance on expensive fuels, and promote cleaner energy solutions.

With plans for expansion and increased adoption, stakeholders believe the initiative could significantly lower transportation costs and improve the quality of life for residents.
