Campaign activities by supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were reportedly disrupted by suspected thugs in Warri, Delta State.
A photographer associated with Obi, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm in a post on X, alleging that politically sponsored thugs attacked members of the campaign group during their mobilisation in the city.
Umoh alleged that the incident involved the Delta State governorship candidate, members of his entourage and other supporters of the Obidient and Kwankwasiya movements.
She wrote, “As of this morning, politically sponsored thugs reportedly opened fire on @MamaPee__, @Drmopaul, @dchrisiyovwaye, the Delta State governorship candidate, members of his entourage, and other Obidient and Kwankwasiya supporters who were out campaigning in Warri.”
A video shared alongside the post showed what appeared to be a chaotic scene involving members of the campaign group.
A voice heard in the video said, “Look at the thugs, they came to attack us. We must face them. We are fully ready for them.”
The circumstances surrounding the reported incident were not immediately clear, while the identities of those allegedly involved were also not established from the material made available.
The allegation comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso stepping up mobilisation in different parts of the country.
Obi and Kwankwaso are being mobilised under the NDC platform, while the wider support structure includes members of the Obidient and Kwankwasiya movements.
The Obi-Kwankwaso support movement recently announced a 59-member presidential campaign council comprising coordinators and directors across the country.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no response from the police or any person accused in connection with the alleged attack in the material made available to The Punch.
The video circulating online could not independently establish the identities of the persons involved or confirm the circumstances leading to the confrontation.
