The Delta State House of Assembly has warned politicians and their supporters against using violence, personal attacks and bitterness in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, gave the warning on Wednesday as lawmakers resumed plenary after their 2026 annual recess.
Guwor urged political parties and their candidates to make ideas, competence, character and service to the people the focus of their campaigns.
He said politicians should avoid turning elections into a do-or-die affair, stressing that the interest of the people should remain the priority.
The Speaker noted that campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections had already commenced on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates would begin on September 9.
He called on candidates, party leaders, supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral process.
According to him, the election should be a contest of ideas and programmes capable of improving the lives of Nigerians rather than a period of division and violence.
Meanwhile, the Speaker said the increase in Delta State’s State Constituencies from 29 to 38 would strengthen representation across the state.
The development will create nine additional constituencies and, according to Guwor, give more communities direct access to legislative representation.
He described the expansion as a historic development, noting that representation remained a key part of democracy.
Guwor also directed lawmakers to return to legislative business with renewed commitment and ensure that pending Bills, Motions and Petitions were given prompt attention.
He urged committee chairmen and members to apply the knowledge gained from their leadership training at the London Business School to their work in the Assembly.
The Speaker said the House would continue to focus on legislation, oversight and effective representation for the people of Delta State.
He also commended the state government for organising the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the Assembly’s recess.
Guwor said the summit had helped to showcase Delta’s investment opportunities and attract investors from within and outside Nigeria.
He assured investors that the Assembly would continue to support legislation that would create a favourable environment for businesses and investment in the state.
The Speaker further congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation.
He thanked God for protecting members of the Assembly and their families during the recess and urged lawmakers to immediately settle down to work.
Guwor said the remaining part of the legislative calendar required greater commitment from lawmakers to meet the expectations of their constituents.
