Delta Permanent Secretaries get new homes, vehicles from Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has commissioned 12 four-bedroom duplexes and newly constructed internal roads and drainage facilities at the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Asaba.

The governor also presented 12 new official vehicles to Permanent Secretaries as part of efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of senior civil servants in the state.

Oborevwori, who spoke during the commissioning ceremony, said the projects were aimed at creating a conducive environment for public servants to perform their duties effectively.

He said Permanent Secretaries played a critical role in the administration of government as administrative heads of ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, providing appropriate accommodation and official vehicles for the officers would improve their efficiency and productivity.

“Today’s ceremony is another milestone in our journey towards enhancing public sector efficiency. Since the inception of this administration on May 29, 2023, we have worked to ensure that deserving public servants are properly and adequately supported in line with the functionality of their offices,” he said.

The governor said the 12 duplexes were part of his administration’s efforts to provide accommodation befitting the status and responsibilities of Permanent Secretaries.

He recalled that the government had also constructed eight additional duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba.

Oborevwori said the internal roads and drainage systems at the Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters had also been rehabilitated to address the erosion and flooding that previously affected the area.

He said the roads and drainage facilities were in a poor condition before the intervention, resulting in flooding and erosion.

“The roads and drainage systems in the quarters were in a complete state of disrepair. They were severely eroded and prone to heavy flooding. With the completion of this work, the residents now have long-term relief, while the aesthetics of the quarters have also been significantly improved,” he said.

The governor disclosed that the construction of the duplexes was awarded in October 2025, adding that the projects were completed within a short period.

302 benefit from vehicle loans

Oborevwori also disclosed that 302 public servants had benefited from the Public Officers’ Vehicle Loan Scheme, while 119 others had accessed the Public Officers’ Housing Loan Scheme.

He said seven Permanent Secretaries had earlier received official vehicles, while the 12 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries were being presented with new vehicles.

The governor added that his administration had introduced farming support for civil servants interested in agriculture to enable them to generate additional income while contributing to food security.

On training, he said 450 senior management staff had participated in a seven-week training programme designed to improve their leadership skills and prepare them for higher responsibilities.

Oborevwori also said his administration had maintained merit-based appointments and career progression in the civil service.

He noted that all 25 local government areas in Delta now had Permanent Secretaries following the appointment and swearing-in of 12 new Permanent Secretaries.

The governor recalled that Delta was among the first states to fully implement the new national minimum wage.

He urged civil servants to reciprocate the government’s welfare initiatives through dedication, professionalism, integrity and accountability.

Oborevwori also appealed to the beneficiaries of the new houses and vehicles to maintain and protect them.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Housing, Godknows Angele, said the 12 duplexes were equipped with solar power and water facilities.

He commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of civil servants and supporting the Ministry of Housing to deliver the project.

The State Head of Service, Dr Minnie Oseji, described the projects as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare, dignity and productivity of senior civil servants.

Oseji said the provision of accommodation and official vehicles would improve the mobility and operational efficiency of Permanent Secretaries.

She also commended the governor for supporting training programmes, digitalising government processes and funding Public Service Week activities.
