President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with about 250,000 military personnel expected to benefit from the new pay package.
The salary adjustment, which will take effect from September 1, was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, senior military officers from the rank of Brigadier-General to General will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The Federal Government said the review would raise the annual salary bill for members of the Armed Forces from ₦660bn to ₦924bn.
Tinubu said the salary increase reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in tackling insecurity across the country.
He noted that troops have continued to risk their lives in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He also pledged that his administration would continue to modernise the Armed Forces by providing improved weapons, equipment and technology needed to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
According to Tinubu, security remains a key priority of his administration because national development cannot be achieved without peace and stability.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deploying all available military and law enforcement resources to protect lives and property across the country.
The President urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the nation.
“We shall continue to prioritise troop welfare and remain committed to defeating those who threaten the peace and unity of our country,” he said.
