The Delta State Ministry of Technical Education on Wednesday held a rare farewell ceremony for its outgoing Permanent Secretary, Dr Gloria Ferife, following her transfer to the Ministry of Health, while also honouring members of staff who retired after years of service.
The event, held at the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba, turned into a celebration of public service as colleagues, directors, principals of technical colleges and senior government officials paid glowing tributes to Ferife’s leadership and the contributions of the retiring officers.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr Smart Ufoh, described Ferife as an exceptional administrator whose professionalism and wealth of experience helped strengthen the ministry.
He said her guidance was invaluable when he assumed office as commissioner from the private sector with little knowledge of public administration.
According to him, Ferife’s leadership, administrative skills and commitment contributed significantly to the achievements recorded by the ministry.
“I discovered that she is highly knowledgeable, pragmatic and an exceptional administrator. Her contributions ensured that the ministry carried out its responsibilities effectively, and I have no doubt that she will also excel in the Ministry of Health,” he said.
Ufoh urged workers to maintain unity and teamwork, saying a peaceful work environment was necessary for improved productivity and service delivery.
He also congratulated the retired officers and prayed for good health and fulfilment as they begin a new phase of life.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Technical Education, Dr Anthony Okwunze, said the event was organised to appreciate officers who had served the state diligently before retiring, as well as staff transferred to other ministries.
He described the occasion as a celebration of faithful service, dedication and commitment to duty.
Responding, Ferife thanked the ministry for organising what she described as an uncommon farewell for a permanent secretary on transfer.
She said the Ministry of Technical Education was her first posting as a permanent secretary and admitted she initially had little knowledge of technical education.
However, she said the support and cooperation she received from directors, principals and other members of staff enabled her to settle quickly and perform effectively.
“I came into the ministry without knowing much about technical education, but the directors, staff and principals welcomed me warmly and taught me everything I needed to know. Whatever we achieved was a collective effort,” she said.
Ferife expressed appreciation to the commissioner and members of staff for their cooperation and urged them to give the same support to her successor to ensure the ministry continued to grow.
The ceremony featured goodwill messages, presentation of gifts and tributes in honour of the outgoing permanent secretary, retiring officers and staff members transferred to other ministries.
