The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Olakunle Nafiu, has warned that organisations that fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members posted to them risk being blacklisted by the scheme.
Nafiu said the welfare and safety of corps members remain a priority for the Federal Government, urging employers to fulfil their responsibilities by providing the necessary support for those serving in their organisations.
He gave the warning during a workshop in Lokoja, Kogi State, organised to discuss ways of improving the welfare of corps members serving in organisations across the state.
The NYSC boss also appealed to state and local governments, as well as other stakeholders, to strengthen their support for the scheme to ensure corps members enjoy a safe and conducive service year.
He advised corps members to remain security-conscious and report any suspicious activities promptly to the relevant authorities.
Nafiu also urged them to be disciplined, committed to their duties and stay away from acts capable of tarnishing the image of the scheme.
He encouraged corps members to take the post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, saying it would equip them with practical skills for self-reliance after service.
He urged them to identify business opportunities in their host communities and begin earning legitimate income while serving.
According to him, the service year should also serve as an opportunity for corps members to develop good financial management habits.
The NYSC Coordinator in Kogi State, Tochi Chris-Moneke, thanked the Director-General for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of corps members and members of staff.
