The Directorate of Transport has organized a one-day compulsory eye screening and re-orientation seminar for drivers in the Delta State Public Service as part of efforts to enhance safety, efficiency, and service delivery across government transportation operations.
The event, held at the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, had as its theme: “Visual Acuity, Stress Management and Road Traffic Laws For Better Service Delivery.”
The programme brought together drivers from across the state public service and featured sessions on eye care and vision testing, vehicle maintenance, road traffic laws, and stress management aimed at improving the health, safety, and performance of drivers on duty.
The Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Onoriode Agofure, who was represented by the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Engr. Victor Omoniyi, said the initiative was designed to ensure that drivers maintain good visual health, improve their driving competence, and deliver effective service to the state.

He explained that compulsory eye screening and regular re-orientation training would remain continuous exercises under the Directorate, stressing that the programme aligns with the M.O.R.E Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which prioritizes workforce development and public service efficiency.
According to him, the workshop covered key areas including screening for common eye conditions, stress management, vehicle maintenance, and refresher training on road traffic regulations to help drivers perform their duties more safely and professionally.
He urged participants to pay full attention to the resource persons, noting that the knowledge gained from the seminar would help reduce road accidents, improve discipline, and promote safer driving practices among drivers in the state workforce.
The commissioner also expressed appreciation to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving and funding the training programme, describing it as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to the welfare and continuous development of public servants, especially drivers.
He commended the organisers for their dedication and formally declared the workshop open.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director of Mechanical Engineering Services, Engr. Kingsley Itimi, emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and defensive driving among public service drivers.

He stated that driving goes beyond moving a vehicle from one point to another, stressing that drivers must ensure safety, responsibility, and proper decision-making while on the road.
Engr. Itimi urged participants to take the training seriously, listen carefully to all lectures, and apply the lessons learned in their daily duties to improve safety and service delivery across the state.
Highlights of the seminar included lectures on Vehicle Maintenance and Road Traffic Laws delivered by Engr. Mrs. Josephine Obukofe, while Dr. Norvil Odili delivered a lecture on Stress Management.
